Carbon & Commodities: Trading Futures

Last year’s election resulted in a change of Government for New Zealand. The Labour-
NZ First-Green Party coalition government has pledged to plant 1 billion trees in the next
decade, to offset looming carbon charges expected in 2030 through the Paris Climate
Change Accord. There are huge challenges for the Government is achieving this
ambitious target, including securing private or Māori land on which to plant trees. Iwi could
be well-placed for taking advantage of this forestry expansion. Craig has been involved
in various roles within financial markets for over 16 years, including expertise across a
broad range of products and markets encompassing Foreign Exchange, Interest Rates,
and also Commodities, providing risk management solutions for some of New Zealand’s
largest corporates. A key part of his current role at Westpac is his involvement in the NZ
Emissions Trading Scheme. Westpac have been trading carbon since 2006 across NZ,
Australian and European Carbon markets. This includes spot, forward and structured
contracts. Westpac plays an important role in the NZ ETS as a market maker providing
price discovery and liquidity to a wide range of participants.
